The Fanes-Sennes-Prags and Puez-Odle nature parks are right on my doorstep – for me the most beautiful ski-touring area in the Alps. Here are my key tips so your touring days are pure enjoyment.
Fitness
Typical day tours have 800 to 1,500 metres of ascent. If you run, cycle or hike regularly in autumn, you’ll start the season more relaxed. I always adapt the pace to the group – what matters is that you still have legs left for the descent.
Ski technique
You should be able to ski confidently off-piste, including in variable snow. Perfect turns aren’t necessary, but controlled skiing in powder and on hard snow makes the day far more fun. We practise kick turns together on the way up.
Gear
- Touring skis with skins, touring boots, poles
- Avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe – nobody goes without them
- Rucksack, helmet, ski crampons, warm spare layer, sun protection
- Renting is no problem: I can organise a complete set, or you can rent directly from Skirent Andrea & Marco in St. Vigil
Avalanche report and choosing the tour
Before every tour I read the current Euregio avalanche report and keep an eye on weather and wind. The great strength of our area: there are countless summits facing every direction. So even when the avalanche danger is considerable, we can usually find a safe, rewarding tour – and follow the best snow every day.
Out with a guide
In the Ski on Tour programme we pick a new tour every day: from Lavarella and Sasso delle Dieci to Piz da Peres. For a whole week there are the ski-touring weeks, based in the valley or at a hut. The season usually runs from mid-December to the end of March, longer at altitude.
