FAQ

Good to know before your tour

Answers to the questions guests ask me most often. Yours isn’t here? Just call or write to me.

Booking & how it works

How do I book a tour?

The easiest way is the enquiry form on the contact page, or by phone, WhatsApp or email. Tell me briefly what you have in mind, when you are available and what experience you have – I’ll get back to you with a suggestion and a no-obligation quote. You book directly with your guide, with no agency and no booking fees.

How far in advance should I enquire?

For the summer high season, 4,000-metre peaks and ski-touring weeks it pays to enquire early – the best dates go quickly. Short-notice tours are often possible too, though: just ask.

Where do we meet?

That depends on the tour and is agreed during planning – usually at a car park, a lift station or right at your accommodation. I live in Enneberg in the Gadertal (Val Badia), between the Fanes-Sennes-Prags and Puez-Geisler nature parks. As a local guide I may drive up to some huts, such as the Lavarella or Scotoni hut, which saves approach time.

How many people does one guide take?

That depends on difficulty and safety. On demanding climbs and on the Matterhorn I go with one guest only, on many Dolomite summits with two or three people. Ski tours and via ferratas are possible in small groups of up to about eight. The maximum group size is listed for each tour.

Requirements

Do I need climbing experience?

Not for every tour. Via ferratas, snowshoe hikes and many normal routes are doable for beginners with good fitness and sure-footedness. Classic rock climbs and high-alpine tours require relevant experience. Tell me honestly about your previous tours – then we’ll find the right objective together.

What do Technique, Stamina and Scenery mean on the tours?

The three bars (1 to 5) give a quick assessment: Technique stands for the climbing or skiing demands, Stamina for length and elevation gain, Scenery for landscape and experience. Climbs also show the difficulty on the UIAA scale.

Can children come along?

Yes, gladly. Via ferratas, climbing courses and snowshoe hikes are great for families. For the classic Dolomite summits such as the Cima Grande the minimum age is 12. I’m a father myself and adapt pace and objective to the children.

Prices, services & vouchers

What is included in the price?

Basically the guiding by a state-certified mountain and ski guide. Hut nights, lift and toll costs are usually not included; on the ski-touring weeks and the “Ski on Tour” program, depending on the offer, half board, luggage or minibus transport and rental equipment are included. What exactly is included is listed for each tour and in my quote.

Is it cheaper per person if we are a group?

Yes. The guiding is shared by the group, so the price per person drops with each additional person – within the maximum group size of each tour. On the “Ski on Tour” program there is also a 10 % discount from three days.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes. I issue personal vouchers for a tour of your choice – via ferrata, ski tour or dream summit, as a value or tour voucher. Just write to me who it’s for and for which occasion.

Equipment

What equipment do I need?

We clarify this during planning, as it depends a lot on the tour. Mountain boots, weatherproof clothing and a rucksack you usually bring yourself. Technical gear such as harness, helmet, via ferrata kit, crampons or avalanche kit (transceiver, shovel, probe) I can provide or organise, or it can be hired locally.

Can I hire ski-touring equipment?

Yes. Complete ski-touring and safety equipment can be lent or organised by me if needed, or you can hire it directly from Andrea & Marco’s ski rental in St. Vigil. On the “Ski on Tour” program rental equipment is already included.

Weather & safety

What happens in bad weather?

Safety comes first. In bad weather, poor conditions or avalanche danger I suggest a safe alternative – such as a lower crag or a sheltered ski tour – or we agree on a new date. We discuss the details when booking.

What qualifications does Simon Kehrer have?

I have been a state-certified mountain and ski guide since 2004, a member of the South Tyrol Mountain and Ski Guides and of the international association IFMGA/UIAGM/IVBV. Since 2009 I have been part of the training team for South Tyrol’s guides. I have climbed around 40 four-thousanders, opened numerous first ascents and been on expeditions as far as Nanga Parbat.

Do I need insurance?

I recommend that all guests have accident and mountain rescue insurance that covers mountain sports – for example through membership of an alpine club. For tours abroad, also check your travel health insurance.

Region & tours

Where do you guide?

My home is the Dolomites – especially Fanes, Sennes, Puez-Geisler, the Three Peaks, Cortina and the Gadertal (Val Badia). For high-alpine tours we go all over the Alps, for example to the Ortler, Piz Bernina or Matterhorn, and in winter also ski touring in the Ahrntal.

Can I ask for a tour that isn’t on the website?

Of course. The list is only a selection – many more climbs, via ferratas, high-alpine tours and ski tours are possible on request. Tell me about your dream tour.

Ready for your dream summit?

Tell me about your goal – I’ll plan the right tour for you.

Book directly with your guide: no agency fees, personal advice and dates that suit you.
